As one of the more expensive devices in the roundup, we expected this extender to deliver top-tier performance. So you can imagine our surprise when it turned out to offer some of the worst performance of the lot.

D-Link rates this as an AC1200 product, which means it offers a combined throughput of 1200Mbps over both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks. It’s one of the smaller extenders in the roundup, so won’t cover both sockets in a dual-power outlet. At the top of the unit are twin antennas which can be rotated through around 160 degrees. Setting it up was rather simple – just plug it in, hit the WPS button on the unit and your router, and you’re good to go. There’s also a mobile app for your smartphone which gives access to slightly more advanced features, but it’s by no means as advanced as the likes of the TP-Link unit.
It also has an Ethernet port on the bottom to connect a single wired device, which is a handy inclusion. As far as LEDs go through, this unit is relatively primitive. There’s a small strip of three LEDs on the front which indicate signal strength from your main router, along with a power indicator on the front, and that’s it.

While it’s easy to set up, nice and small and offers the added convenience of an Ethernet port, the performance of this unit really let it down. We tested every extender three times before averaging the result, as the numbers that came in varied so greatly each time, so we’re sure that our numbers are accurate. At this price point there are far faster extenders on the market, so we’ll have to give the DAP-1620 a miss.
